Swimsuit Rules - Reminder.
The updated Swimsuit rules have been published by the ASA. I have taken the important parts out and hopefully made it a bit easier to understand.
1) Surface covered: Men's swimsuit shall not extend above the navel nor below the knee. Women shall not cover the neck or extend past the shoulders nor shall extend below the knee.
2) Type of material: The material used for swimsuits can be only "Textile Fabric(s)" defined for the purpose of these rules as material consisting of, natural and/or synthetic, individual and non consolidated yarns used to constitute a fabric by weaving, knitting, and/or braiding.
3) Flexibility: the material shall be flexible and soft-folding. The material shall be regular and flat. The material shall not form outstanding shapes or structures, such as scales.
Outside application: No outside application shall be added on the material.
4) Construction: No zippers or other fastening system is allowed. Seams shall be limited to functional systems and shall not create outside shapes.
So in short the suits must not cover any more than specified in paragraph 1). The women's suits must have an open back and not be zipped or fastened with clasp or hooks or any other fastening device. The only fastening allowed is the sting at the waist of mens suits.
The materials must be of a permeable fabric and the suits can no longer contain part textile and part polyimide or any other non permeable fabric.
There is also of course still the ruling that only one swimsuit can be worn for racing. That came into law in may 2009 and has not changed.
Winter League Round 2 January 23 2010
After Round 1 at Trowbridge last year Bradford are lying in 6th place out of the 23 teams competing in the Wiltshire Winter League. We were missing some of our regular swimmers in the first round and we need to swim really well in Round 2 to make up ground on some of the teams above us. Remember that after the third round only the top six teams are eligible for the Level 1 final at the Link Centre.
Leading positions after Round 1
Swindon Dolphins A 856 points
Trowbridge A 806
Tigersharks A 802
Salisbury Stingrays 794
Chippenham 673
Bradford on Avon 660.5
Corsham A 626.5
Selected swimmers need to be at the Clarendon Pool at 6.15 pm and the doors open at 6.30. We are swimming in lane 5.
NEW HEAD COACH APPOINTED
We are pleased to announce the appointment of Andy Harris as the Club’s new Head Coach.
Andy has been coaching at Swindon Dolphins, where he has been in charge of the junior squad, whilst also helping with training their performance squad.
Andy will take up the position leading the coaching team from 1st January, but will be attending a number of sessions through December to get to know us all! Please do talk to him, make him welcome, and ask any questions you may have.
Once again I thank all our coaching team who are doing a superb job, and giving up so much time for the swimmers.
Thank you all.
John Carling, Chairman
Andy is a highly successful swimming teacher and coach having been with Swindon Dolphins since 2006. He has experience in working with external organisations to promote swimming at club and business levels. He also holds coaching certificates in football, athletics and is currently taking Fitness Trainer Level 3. He is a Level 2 ASA Teacher and Coach and is currently completing ASA Level 3 Swimming Coaching.
He is married with two children, a boy and a girl, both of whom are club swimmers; some of our 6th form members may remember Andy’s daughter in our past galas with Dolphins. His whole family are involved in swimming, which is excellent in a Club like ours with its ethic of family membership and swimming, both competitive and non-competitive.
2009 AGM Chairman’s Report
My report doesn’t normally dwell on the actual swimming, as others will cover this, but I’d just like to mention two achievements – firstly Jessie Foster for her achievements at the National Championships and secondly Rebecca Smith for her Master’s swimming – in this year’s county championships Rebecca won every event in her age group, gained four new county records and was the overall ladies’ champion. Well done to them both.
We have to remember as a club and a committee that the swimmers and the swimming are what we exist for, and always do our utmost to work in their best interest. The success of our swimmers in all competitions reflects back on us all as a club, and is what we must aim for.
We have had a challenging year on the
coaching front, firstly with the unexpected resignation of Lawrence
Northover. We had a surprisingly high
number of coaches interested in the position following our advertising – a
number from abroad who Ruth and I were keen to visit and interview, I believe
it was one in
I would like to thank Rebecca Smith, Andrew Harper, Bethan Smith, Keith Withers and all the others who are covering the squad coaching at the moment.
The final part of my report is the thank you’s. There are many people to thank, and it can be difficult to sound sincere. I know when I am taking sessions the thank you’s that are important are the ones from the swimmers as they climb out, and from their parents. I always try to thank the coach on Tuesdays at the uni, if I can gather enough breath!
Anyway, firstly I’d like to thank all of our poolside helpers – the teachers and coaches that we see regularly giving up their time for the swimmers are the front line of the club, and deserve all of our thanks. There are many of you, and I thank you all.
Particular thanks also to those parents that have newly started helping out on poolside – having helpers on poolside can make all the difference to the sessions – particularly the behaviour of the swimmers. It’s amazing how the turns improve if there’s someone standing on poolside at the far end!
Thanks to all of you – and more helpers are always welcome – it can be much more satisfying than sitting watching, no special gear needed!
The same must go to the small pool teachers and helpers, hidden behind the door to the small pool on a Friday night they do a fantastic job of teaching and instilling enthusiasm for “aquatics” as we must now call it in to the younger children. Thank you all.
Thanks also to all of you that run the disability sessions in the small pool on Sunday evenings.
Also seen on poolside in the natty yellow shirts are our lifeguards. They not only give up time to lifeguard our sessions, but also spend time completing compulsory training every month. Thanks to all of our lifeguards.
Now our committee – thanks to all of you both last year’s members and those who are newly joining this coming year’s committee – it’s good of you to give up time and help take on the responsibility for the running of the club.
Particular thanks to those with the more onerous duties – Jo Hine our secretary, Nick Matthews for looking after the finances, Su Sealy for membership, with John Sealy also working in the background, Margaret Smith for all she does, so much it’s hard to summarise, Jenny Foster for gala team slips etc as well as selling the kit, Emma Legg for her work with CRB checks etc, Bethan for Swim 21, Mike Marshman our “webmaster”, Tamsin Burton for organising the open meets, Emma Philpott and Steve Reckless the club captains and Vera, whose house will again soon be full of trophies ready for the club championships.
Many others are working all the time doing all sorts of tasks for us, and thanks to you all.
Finally thanks to Ruth Marshman, to me the perfect vice chairman who deals with all the problems whist I’m away at sea and leaves peace for me when I’m at home! A huge thank you to Ruth from me.
Wiltshire ASA Masters Competition on 3 Oct.2009 at the Five Rivers Leisure Centre,
While the rest of the country was sitting down to watch Strictly Come Dancing or X-Factor on Saturday night, a group of BOA Masters swimmers were preparing for a performance of their own.
The 3rd round of the Wiltshire ASA Masters Championships attracts swimmers from all over the county to compete against each other vying for titles and medals; for most though, it is a chance to catch up with old friends and make new ones, swim and challenge yourself. It isn’t strictly a social gathering; although those do exist in the Masters calendar, but the championships provide the opportunity to satisfy that competitive streak that we all embody. So, after months, weeks, the odd day and in one or two cases the odd hour of training, ten BOA swimmers completed the warm up and set their sights on delivering a performance that would be worthy of a smile from Simon Cowell.
The Wiltshire Masters Championships are split over 3 Saturdays throughout the year, and each has 5 individual events and associated relays. The BOA team consisted of Emma Philpott, Bethan Smith, Rebecca Smith, Ann-Marie Withers, Jonathan Knee, Mike Legg, Nick Matthews, Mike Wareham, Paul Woodward and Keith Withers with Team Manager, Margaret Smith, and while we didn’t have competitors in all the age groups, the team were still able to accumulate points towards the top club award. There were good swims from across the team but of particular note Emma, Rebecca, Bethan, Jonathan, Nick and Keith all recorded 1st places in their age groups. The effort put in by all helped to secure 4th place in the top club competition behind the big teams from Swindon and
All of the BOA swimmers put in solid performances to better their PBs or personal goals, but there were times when we all left the water thinking ……. ‘if only I had…….’. Still, there is always next time [February 2010]. BOA swimming club provides capacity for Masters Swimming sessions, so if you want to jump and participate in some swim training come and join us. Masters swimming is available for 18 year olds through to 95 years young. See you on the poolside soon.
Success at Bristol North Open Meet September 2009
Bradford-on-Avon Swimming Club’s 11 year old girls swept up all the trophies between them in the Bristol North Junior Open Meet held at Weston-Super-Mare on 19th and 26th September. National Age Group Finalist Jessie Foster was 6 seconds clear of her nearest rival, team mate, Rebecca Hawkins, in the 100m breaststroke and also clinched a close battle between BOA swimmers; Chloe Flower (2nd) and Eleanor Hine (3rd) in the 100m freestyle. These two wins helped Jessie Foster on her way to winning the top girl in her age group for the second year running. Chloe Flower beat the three other Bradford girls to give the Club a 1,2,3,4 in the 100m butterfly, setting a new championship record in the heats, whilst Eleanor Hine held off Jessie Foster to take the 100m backstroke title. The awesome foursome joined together to dominate both the 4 x 50m freestyle and medley relay finals. Foster, Hine and Flower were joined by Florence Legg to continue their winning ways in the 12 year old 4 x 50m freestyle and medley relays. Florence Legg also managed to secure places in the finals for the 100m backstroke, butterfly and breaststroke.
The 10 year old girls were also successful in reaching their finals; the 4 x 25m medley relay with Megan Reckless, Tiana James, Eleanor Dorsman and Georgia Keen, and the 4 x 25m freestyle relay with Sophie Maw joining Reckless, James and Dorsman. Eleanor Dorsman secured 7th place in the individual 50m butterfly final. Several 9 year olds enjoyed their first open meet experience with the relay teams reaching both finals; Stella Cookson, Kara Hughes, Kara Mackintosh and Georgia Keen in the 4 x25m freestyle and Cookson, Keen, Hughes and Charlotte Hazell in the 4 x 25m medley relay. Georgia Keen had a super meet reaching finals in the 50m backstroke and 50m butterfly whilst Kara Mackintosh came 4th in the 25m butterfly.
The boys, although fewer in number, were not to be overshadowed by the girls. Hayden Burton reached all four finals picking up bronze in the 11 years 100m backstroke and silver medals in the 100m freestyle and breaststroke, were team mate Edmund Hames joined him in the final. Michael Dorsman swam to gold in the 10 years 50m backstroke and a 4th place in the 50m butterfly. Finley Jackson was winner by 10 seconds in the 9 year old 50m butterfly and picked up bronze in the 50m breaststroke and 7th places in the 50m freestyle and backstroke where fellow BOA swimmer William Foster came 8th. Other swimmers competing were Megan Cookson, Alex Keen and first timers Florence Boventer, Emily Harrison and Themis Bower.

Summer Moonraker League September 2009
We entered the final round of this competition in third place behind Trowbridge and Swindon Dolphins and realistically knew that we would remain third, although we wanted to put up a good performance to show we were worthy of being in Division 1. Some of our swimmers from two age groups were competing in the Bristol North Open Meet at Weston Super Mare that day and a couple, who only swam in the afternoon session there, made it back to Trowbridge for this evening gala.
Coming into this round Trowbridge were leading Swindon by 17 points and we knew we were in for an exciting, and noisy, evening. All our swimmers competed valiently with our Under 16 boys, Harry Ash, Chris Harber, Michael Sealy, James Marshman and Max Hazell, leading the way with several second places; and with some of them swimming in Open events. Harry Ash gained two firsts and Charlotte Patmore, for the Under 16 girls, achieved one. Michael Sealy came second in the Open 100 Freestyle and Chris Harber second in the Open 100 breaststroke.
For the Under 12s Rebecca Hawkins, Hayden Burton and Geng To Law achieved individual second places but mostly we were in the wake, though not too far behind, of the big two. Dolphins steadily eroded Trowbridge's lead but it was not until event 43 that Dolphins were 8 points ahead and beginning to feel that they might have done enough. Trowbridge came back strongly with four firsts in a row but then Dolphins won two of the final three events to win the league by 5 points. For a small town Bradford can feel proud to be competing successfull at the top level in Wiltshire and being placed third in the county.
Results of final round; Swindon Dolphins A 126, Trowbridge A 104, Bradford on Avon 69.
Overall result; Swindon Dolphins A 323, Trowbridge A 318, Bradford on Avon 257
Fighting Performance in Summer League 2009
Two rounds of the Summer League have taken place in July after the postponement of Round I in June and the withdrawal of Tigersharks A from Division 1. This left just three teams, Trowbridge, Swindon Dolphins and ourselves. We hosted an enjoyable Round 1 at Monkton Combe where Dolphins fielded a weakened team as several swimmers were competing in a Level 1 meet that weekend. Bradford led after the first 30 events, allowed both Trowbridge and Dolphins to gain ground in the next 10 but rallied in the final section to take a spirited second place after completing all 50 events. Points score: Trowbridge 107, Bradford 100, Swindon 92. All Bradford swimmers can be proud of their performances .
On 18th July we travelled to the Link Centre with a weakened team ourselves, as GCSE History students were going to the Somme and several others had prior engagements. Again we started well and although in third place after 20 events only five points covered the three teams. Our least favourite events must be those in the middle of this League as we again fell back but once more finished strongly with three firsts and three seconds in the final ten events. Points score: Trowbridge 107, Swindon 105, Bradford 88. Again Bradford swimmers can be proud of this, with many of them swimming up and with only two genuine open male swimmers, both still of school age; they and 15 year olds were swimming against grown men in the Open events.
South West Region Championships, Relays 2009
Bradford swimmers won three medals in the ASA South West Region realys on 17th May 2009 at Millfield. The boys' 15/16 team of Harry Ash, Chris Harber, Michael Sealy and James Marshman won silver in the 200m freestyle relay with a time of 1.45.67, with the City of Bristol just taking the gold with a time of 1.45.00. They won bronze in the 200m medley relay, with a time of 2.02.22, behind the City of Bristol and Launceston 2000.
The girls' 11/12 team of Chloe Flower, Jessie Foster, Flo Legg and Ellie Hine won silver in the medely relay with a time of 2.21.87, just behind Yeovil whose time was 2.21.08. They were 5th in the freestyle relay with a time of 2.09.06.
The 15/16 girls' team of Charlotte Patmore, Josie Hunt, Savannah Wareham and Colette McCambridge were just edged out of the medals coming fourth in both relays. Their times were, freestyle 2.01.62, medley 2.16.30.
Southern Junior League 18th April 2009
Bradford hosted Round 1 at Bath swimmimg pool on a pleasant spring evening. Inside the Leisure Centre it was somewhat warmer and quite noisy as there was a public session in the fun pool area. We were competing against some strong teams including SX3 (all 3 Swindon clubs), Tornadoes, Thornbury, and Ferndown from the outskirts of Bournemouth.
Despite this we achieved 6 first places in the 49 events with successes in the girls 11 & under freestyle and medley relays, boys 10 year breaststroke, girls 11 & under backstroke and butterfly, and the girls 9 year breaststroke. After some exciting races cheered on by swimmers and parents we finished in a comfortable third place with the final scores;
Ferndown 248
SX3 237
Bradford 189
Thornbury 143
Tornadoes 139
North Dorset 54
Our thanks to all parents for their work as officials, senders, drinks carriers and helpers.
Masters Swimming News
At the end of last month 16 of our Masters swimmers took part in the first block of this year’s Wiltshire County championships. The team had a very successful evening, winning 17 gold, 14 silver and 7 bronze medals. There were many excellent swims, both individually and in relays.
Bradford on Avon are now fourth overall in the county, and Rebecca Smith is top ladies swimmer.
Well done to all – keep up the training ready for the next gala (June 6th)!
Moonraker Winter League Final 2009
After three rounds Bradford entered Final 1 in third place overall out of the 22 competing teams. With a few swimmers missing we knew that it might be a difficult evening at the Link Centre, especially as there were some unfamiliar swimmers in other teams. Our team swam magnificently and with great spirit but, unlike in the earlier rounds when we were swimming against the same teams, we failed to achieve any first places. Our Under 15 boys and 12 and Under girls did each get a second place but normally they would have recorded firsts and seconds, not seconds and thirds.
Although only five points behind third placed Tigersharks after ten events there was a 21 point difference after 20 events and we realised we were destined to be fourth. Final placings after all 39 relays were:
Swindon Dolphin A 206 points (2nd 182)
Trowbridge A 191 points (3rd 172)
Tigersharks A 149.5 points (1st 198)
Bradford on Avon 103.5 points (5th 93)
Chippenham 85 points (6th 51)
Salisbury Stingrays 77 points (4th 118)
2008 placings and points in parenthesis
The evening was overshadowed by the news received en route to Swindon that Ted Smith, wife of Margaret and father of Rebecca and Bethan, had suffered a heart attack while in France. Sadly they were unable to reach him before he died and all club members extend their sympathy to the Smith family, who have been at the centre of Bradford swimming for many years.
23rd February 2009
The club held a successful Presentation Evening on Sunday 7th February after training finished at 6.00 p.m. Three tables of glittering trophies were presented to swimmers from all age groups while Sharon Carling received the Wiltshire ASA Teaching Trophy for the most successful club in the county at teaching children to swim. This was the fifth year in succession that Bradford have won this trophy.
Winners of all the 2008 Club Championships and other trophy winners can be found on ‘Results’. A full list of medallists will be available here soon.
18th October 2008 Bradford wins Jean Findlay Junior Trophy Gala at Keynsham
Bradford’s 12 and under swimmers kept spectators on the edge of their seats in a pulsating competition with a strong Keynsham team. Keynsham had won their Jean Findlay Junior Trophy Gala for the past seven years and were confident of retaining the trophy against teams from Thornbury, Stroud, Bradford and their own 2nd team.
However Bradford provided strong opposition and contrived to produce a nail biting finish. The two teams were evenly matched throughout the gala after Keynsham had taken an early lead of 34 points to 28 after eight events. The scores were 72 points each after 18 events and 112 points each after 28; by the 38th event Keynsham led by 155 to 154 but after the 49th, and final event, the scores were 201 points each.
On a count back of 1st places Bradford won by 23 to Keynsham’s 20; a fitting climax as the team had lost on a similar count back a few weeks earlier. A very pleasing fact was that Bradford had no disqualifications in the whole competition with the young swimmers making perfect starts, turns and finishes. It was the first competitive gala for Kara Mackintosh, Finley Jackson, and Tom Diamond while young Florence Legg swam up an age group to compete in the 12 and under 100m butterfly.
The 10 and 11 year old girls, Jessie Foster, Ellie Hine, Rebecca Hawkins, Holly Humphries, Chloe Flower and Florence Legg won all their relay races and individual events. For the girls the outstanding performance came in the 12 and under backstroke where Katie Philpott won in a time of 1 minute 22.37 seconds.
All their relay races were also won by the 10 and 11 year old boys, Hayden Burton, Wilfred Lapes, Edmond Hames, Joe Gurney, Tokes Sawyerr, Toto Law and Guy Harrison-Murray. Swimmers of age groups enjoyed the gala and showed really good team spirit, cheering each other on to keep the team challenging for the lead.
Chief Coach, Lawrence Northover, was unable to be either at Keynsham or with the Bradford senior squad, who won the Trowbridge/Leer Twinning gala on the same night. In his absence he was delighted with the work and support of coaches Phil James at Keynsham and Andrew Harper with the senior squad, and the parents and helpers who encouraged both squads to victory. Lawrence said, “I know that when I’m unable to attend competitions the teams are in good hands and well supported with the fantastic level of commitment we receive from parents and other people involved in Bradford on Avon Amateur Swimming Club.
18th October 2008 Bradford wins Twinning Trophy
Bradford were invited as guest team at the Trowbridge/Leer Swimming Gala and somewhat spoiled the party for the host team and their German guests by winning the trophy. We arrived at the Trowbridge pool at 5.45 p.m., changed at 6.00 and shortly afterwards all three teams, Trowbridge, Poseidon from Leer, and ourselves were on poolside. It became apparent that something was wrong as the movable floor in the deeper half of the pool was still in the raised position. Whilst we were changing the mechanism that raises and lowers the floor had broken and it was stuck in the upright position.
This left half a pool in which some swimmers could dive in, glide, turn and glide again and with a couple of strokes be back at the start. Another pool was needed – Bradford pool was open to 6.30 for lifeguard training but no one was answering the telephone there. A member of Trowbridge staff drove to Bradford to establish communication. Success! Swimmers donned clothes over their costumes (except one young lady from Bradford who travelled in her costume and flip flops) and piled into any available car or coach at 6.40 for the three mile journey. After a warm up the gala began at 7.25 instead of the advertised 6.30.
We were a little light in the 12 and under age group as we had a team of this age swimming at Keynsham that evening. However with 9 and 10 year olds we made up a team and Lottie Hazel, Megan Reckless, Poppy Mumford, Simeon Haththo and William Keiser were given a baptism of water and noise. However Leer, although enthusiastic and vocal, did not have enough swimmers for all the age groups and so, of their plenty, Trowbridge lent them some of theirs.
The races were an interesting mix of serious competition and fun. We started badly in the boys’ open 4 x 100 freestyle (3 swimmers were younger than ‘open’) but retrieved the situation by winning the girls open event, where again 3 swimmers were younger than ‘open’. Then came a mixed event with 8 swimmers each completing a length of pull, with a kickboard followed by a kick only race holding the board in front of them. A good second place in each of these. Another 8 swimmers took part in the water polo event and excellent dribbling skills from Emma Philpott enabled Chris Maslen to storm home in 1st place.
Two open I.M. 4 x 50m followed; for the boys Chris Maslen, Steven Reckless, Phil Gaffney and Mark Warren, and for the girls, Josie Hunt, Natalie Reckless, Emily Leahy and Meg Marshman, led in every length to take 1st place in both events. In the 12 and under mixed freestyle our young swimmers did very well to take 2nd place while both 14and under teams and the boys 16 and under team came 1st in the 4 x 50m freestyle relay. The 16 and under girls had a good 2nd place after leading for most of the way. Well done Max Hazel, Michael Sealy, James Marshman, Peter Richardson, Mark Warren, Savannah Wareham, Isabella Dorsman, Sophie Flower, Sinead McCambridge, Josie Hunt, Natalie Reckless and Collette McCambridge; 5 of whom were swimming up as 16 and unders.
Next came the big float race, in which a young member of the team on a float was propelled up and down the pool by an increasing number of club swimmers – starting with 2 and ending with 8. Despite a late rule change we came 2nd in this and then took on the tee shirt and gloves relay. 12 swimmers, girl and boy alternating, each swam a length wearing a tee shirt and gloves, got out and transferred both to the next swimmer. We began with our younger swimmers and were some distance behind the other teams, who put some older members in first. However our policy began to pay off and we closed the gap. In the penultimate length Natalie Reckless overtook the Trowbridge swimmer and a quick change allowed Phil Gaffney to come home 1st.
The final race was a freestyle cannon in which we were second all the way but Bradford had done enough to win the trophy by two points. Everyone in the team swam well and enjoyed themselves. Apart from those mentioned above good times were recorded by Oliver Leahy and Albany Burton, with the latter bringing home the open freestyle relay team in 1st place.
4th October 2008 Bradford field three teams on Saturday
Considerable strength in depth allowed Bradford on Avon Amateur Swimming Club to field three teams in different events last Saturday. A young squad, with several swimmers making their competitive debuts, travelled to Keynsham for the Dave Bryant Memorial Gala.
With races for 10, 11 12, and 13 year olds the club introduced some 9 year olds and many swimmers swam up in older age groups. Despite this Bradford tied on 151 points behind host club Bristol Penguins, but were placed third as they had fewer first places. The young swimmers were happy to come home with their trophy having gained valuable experience in a new environment with other clubs.
At the same time squad swimmers were at the impressive Horfield Leisure Centre in Bristol for the George Lee Memorial Trophy. The gala comprised 41 relay races in four age groups culminating in a ‘cannon’ with eight swimmers from each club. In a fast and furious competition between six clubs in the eight-lane pool Bradford achieved ten first places.
The 15 and under boys team of Harry Ash, Michael Sealy, James Marshman, Peter Richardson, Max Hazell and Chris Harber won all five of their races, while the 11 and under girls, Chloe Flower, Jessie Foster, Rebecca Hawkins, Charlotte Stubbs and Ellie Hine won three of theirs and came second in the other two. The girls’ open team, Josie Hunt, Charlotte Patmore, Savannah Wareham, Emily Leahy, Rachel Fotheringham, Natalie Reckless, Collette McCambridge, Sophie Flower took two firsts and came second in their other races.
All the swimmers performed well with most teams finishing in the first three in their races but in a very close finish Bradford finished third overall, just four points behind the winners, Thornbury.
The third team were the somewhat older Masters, aged 25 and over, who competed in the third block of races of the Wiltshire championships at Salisbury. Thirteen club members, six of whom had children competing in the other two galas, swam against the best in the county. Gold medals were won by Rebecca Smith (4), Sharyn Carling (4), Jon Dyke (3), Bethan Smith (1), Nick Matthews (1), and Phil Gaffney (1).
At the close of the evening Bradford finished fourth overall, behind two strong teams from Swindon and one from Salisbury, both somewhat larger places than Bradford. Rebecca Smith set a new record of 1 min. 11.57 seconds in the 4 x 25m. individual medley and was joint winner of the Under 40s Individual Women’s Cup; she would have been outright winner had not her sister Bethan beaten her into second place in the butterfly.
September 2009 Young Bradford Swimmers win 10 Golds at Weston Super Mare
Bradford on Avon swimmers enjoyed a highly successful gala at Weston Super Mare in the Bristol North Swimming Club Junior Meet in September. This meet, for swimmers aged between 9 and 12 years, featured events for all four strokes plus a front crawl and medley relay in each of the four age groups.
From 28 events over two weekends Bradford won medals in 17 with ten golds, making it the third most successful club in boys’ and girls’ teams and also third overall at the meet. They were competing against over 20 clubs from throughout south west England and South Wales
Bradford 10 year olds carried all before them; the girls, Ellie Hine, Rebecca Hawkins, Jessie Foster and Chloe Flower won both their freestyle and medley relays and for good measure swam up to win both relays in the 11 year old age group, The boys’ team of Robert Ash, Edmond Hames, Hayden Burton and Geng To Law won their medley relay and came second in the freestyle relay.
In the individual events for 10 year olds Chloe Flower came 1st in the 50m freestyle, 2nd in the 50m butterfly and 3rd in the 50m breaststroke; Jessie Foster 1st in both 50m breaststroke and butterfly, 2nd in the 50m freestyle and 3rd in the 50m backstroke. For the boys Hayden Burton won both the 50m freestyle and breaststroke and came 2nd in the 50m butterfly and backstroke. Jessie Foster was top 10 year old girl at the meet and Hayden Burton the top 10 year old boy.
Raphi Dorsman, Luke Owen, Michael Dorsman and William Foster came 2nd in the 9 year old boys’ relay, while Tiana Jones won silver in the 9 year old girls’ 25m butterfly. For the 11 year old boys Wilf Lapes gained silver in the 100m backstroke.
Bradford’s strong performance came partly as a result of dedication to training of young swimmers and their parents and partly in having 34 swimmers taking part, said chief coach Laurence Northover. In 2007 there were only three Bradford relay teams but this year eight teams took part in 17 relay swims; in 2006 only 13 swimmers represented the club.
All coaches, officials and parents at the club were delighted with the young swimmers’ performances as it reflects the hard work put in at the club in recent years. Bradford is attracting more young swimmers and more members than most other Wiltshire clubs.
