For the last few years, we have run a programme for our 14 to 25 year olds to help them explore a wider range of activities within our sport.  As a club, we understand the importance of young volunteers and the need to provide them with opportunities to develop the skills and techniques to become teachers, coaches and officials.

What will I need to do?

Attend two local development days that provide a solid foundation in coaching, techniques, leadership and planning from which to progress.

Complete 25 hours volunteering.  It can be a mixture of poolside work (coaching, teaching, officiating), planning, running a fun gala or helping run a club

Typically, those on the programme, attend a development day held locally before progressing the remainder of the programme at their leisure.  The aim of the development days is to build confidence in young volunteers and offer a solid foundation for them to build upon as they develop their skills.  Governance of the Young Volunteer programme is provided regionally and sees previous participants use the programme to help with their studies at GCSE and A'Level, typically as part of the Duke of Edinburgh or Community Trust activities.

How will it help me?

Develop skills to complement your school or 6th form/college education

Contribute towards your volunteer hours with DofE award and other Community Service schemes

Build your confidence working with your peers within the club and wider swimming family

Develop your leadership skills and take responsibility for the delivery of agreed outcomes

Aside from the development of personal skills, the programme will help you train to become a qualified timekeeper and give you an insight in furthering your officials qualifications.  It is not unusual to see our Young Volunteers helping out on poolside and at key competitions, particularly our club championships.  Similarly, many of our past volunteers have used it to gain experience before pursuing a teaching or coaching qualification which could then be used to earn some money during summer holidays.  One of our members went to New Zealand to teach!
